BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA9) -- A trash compactor fire caused a road closure in Bethesda on Sunday evening.

The fire broke just after 4:30 p.m. in the 8200 block of Wisconsin Avenue, fire officials said. The bulk of the fire was in a large trash compactor in the basement and heavy smoke was visible on multiple floors, fire officials said.

Wisconsin Avenue was closed at Battery Lane due to fire department activity.
