Elderly woman dies after 3-car-crash in Bethesda

BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA9) -- An elderly New Jersey woman has succumbed to injuries sustained during a three car crash in Bethesda on Saturday.

The accident happened around noon on Democracy Boulevard at the ramp from southbound I-270, police said. The woman was a passenger in a Toyota Camry that was struck just after exiting the Southbound ramp of I-270.

The woman, identified as 88-year-old Betty Nelson of Cherry Hill, New Jersey was transported to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The Toyota Camry was struck by a truck owned by Montgomery County, which was then struck by a Mercedes, police said.

The other passengers involved in the accident suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Westbound Democracy Boulevard was shut down for several hours, after the accident, police said.

This collision remains under investigation. Detectives are looking into the traffic light cycle at the time of the incident. Any witnesses are urged to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
