The first World AIDS Day was observed December 1, 1988 by the World Health Organization and the United Nations.

Today, Montgomery County officials are marking World AIDS Day, with a reminder to residents that there are nearly 3,000 individuals living with HIV/AIDS in the community and that efforts continue to focus on the prevention of new cases. In 2009, there were 150 new cases of HIV in Montgomery County.

“While there have been many advances in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, we need to focus on making sure that we prevent new cases,” said County Health Officer Dr. Ulder J. Tillman.

Tips for Eating Healthy on a Budget

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a realistic low-cost at-home food plan is about $110 per week for a family of two, and $187 per week for a family of four who have kids over six years old. Even with their low-cost figures, some families may wonder in this economy how to make that work, while still striving to eat healthy meals. The good news is that there are many things that families can do to help keep costs down, yet eat healthy at the same time.

“Many people make the assumption that it costs more to eat healthy,” explains Jolly Backer, the chief executive officer of Fresh Healthy Vending (www.freshvending.com). “That is not necessarily true, especially for those families that really make an effort to focus on healthy eating within their budget.”

Concussions – 5 Tips to Help You Know the Signs & Protect Your Mind

McLean, VA – November 2, 2011 – Walk it off!” “Get back in the game!  Great character-building advice?  Well, maybe sometimes, but if you or someone you know has suffered a concussion, this advice is absolutely WRONG!

Gary Kaplan, DO, Medical Director of The Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine in McLean, VA, advises: “If your child suffers a blow to the head during practice or a game, he or she should be taken off the field immediately. Ignoring the incident and allowing him or her to continue to play could result your child suffering additional concussions.”
