Grammy Nominated Jazz Vocalist Surprised Local Students With A Music Lesson

As most kids in the area headed back to school Tuesday, 100 aspiring musical students at James Hubert Blake High School filed into the amphitheater for an interactive lesson in life and the performing arts from six-time Grammy nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon.

“These young people are our future. I think it’s important to provide a role model that they aren’t going to find in other outlets,” explained jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon.

The workshop featured exercises on singing and songwriting and the journey towards achieving a goal. Freelon also gave inside tips on how to overcome stage fright and make the right choices in life.

Freelon sang “Come Rain or Come Shine,” by Johnny Mercer to ignite an interactive dialogue that engaged the students in a q & a session exploring the relationship between the artist and the music; the range of emotion in a lyric and the expressive techniques which bring music to life.

Jason J. Swain: A New Use for Fallen Trees- An Art form

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, most people were surveying the damage to their property and calling their power companys. One Kensington, Maryland artist and chainsaw wood cutter, Jason J. Swain, however was looking forward to the storm for the fallen trees and the growth of his wood cutting business.

"Power outages aside, it's not a bad time for me. I'm a portrait artist, but I started doing chainsaw cutting about five years ago when I'd see large trees fall and wood going to waste after severe storms. Everytime a storm comes by, I go looking for wood," explained artist Jason J. Swain.

Born in Brisbane, Australia, Jason comes from a long family tradition of artists. He has a love for the outdoors, which can be seen in his many animal wood carvings.

"There is so much nice wood in Maryland and instead of throwing it out, I turn it into a nice piece of art work," said Swain.

Two free film events for Labor Day Weekend

A few months back I told you about local filmmaker Anthony Greene and his short film anthology A World At Work. Anthony has two new events this week, once again bringing culture to the East side of the Anacostia.

The first is Art Behind the Art, an exhibition at Blank Space SE of behind-the-scenes photography from local film sets. There will be an opening reception at the gallery this Friday September 2 at 7PM. The show will run for a week and coincide with Anthony's second event, The East of the River Film Festival.
