As I entered the cozy atmosphere of The Shapiro Music Room at Strathmore on Wednesday, July 6th; the soothing sound of local pianist Max Hou filled the room and the smell of sweet herbal tea blends and coconut macaroons engulfed my senses.

The Strathmore off Rockville Pike, provides a unique "Afternoon Tea" experience throughout the year (except for August) with specially made tea from Connecticut.

“If I lived here, I would come to Strathmore every day,” said Seattle, Washington resident Vauneva Greenwood.

The tea is served with a light lunch of delectable tea savories by Restaurant Associates.

“We have light tea sandwiches and a variety of scones (we usually give two scones) and a wonderful dessert plate which includes coconut macaroons, little tea cakes and bread,” said Tea Manager Mary Mendoza.

Tea begins at 1 p.m. and is $21.00 per person (pre-paid, non-refundable reservations required).

Tea afternoons are always accompanied by music and vary each week including pianists, violinists, harpists, and flutists.

“She is from Seattle, Washington and I’m from Columbia, Maryland and one of the many wonderful things we do is Afternoon Teas at the Strathmore Mansion. We have been three or four times and love the arts and music combination along with the tea and ambiance. It is a beautiful museum and music center and something to look forward to,” said Michael McCort.
