Thousands of items babies, kids, and teens at bargain prices; consignors make up to70% from their items

September 16, 2010 - Tot Swap (www.totswap.net), Maryland’s largest consignment sale for babies, kids, and teens is returning to the Montgomery County Fairgrounds later this week, followed by Frederick County the following week. Tot Swap helps thousands of families sell their used toys, clothes, and equipment, and find other gently-used items that are "new" to them. Families can get rid of all that stuff their kids have outgrown while making some money, and other families can get major bargains on everything they are looking for. Thanks to the success of the sales, Tot Swap is now offering 65% commission to all consignors, and up to 70% for those who volunteer their time at the event. “We are thrilled to have upped the spilt this year,” says Robyn Rutland, founder of Tot Swap. “We hope that it encourages more families to consign and helps them earn some more money in this economy.”

How Tot Swap began:

After working for someone else for ten years and becoming a mom, Robyn Rutland of Gaithersburg, MD, had launched her own business running college fairs. A few years into it, she was doing some research online and ran across something that caught her eye - a huge consignment sale for babies, kids, and teens, basically giving families the chance to buy and sell gently-used items from one another. Rutland wasn't a garage sale shopper, but as a mom of two (now three), she knew how much stuff she had left over after her kids had outgrown it. After doing loads of research, Rutland decided to take a risk and, in 2006, started Tot Swap, a huge consignment sale that she launched in Montgomery County. It was so successful that she has now expanded it to Frederick and Howard Counties, and to Timonium, MD. “Like any mom, I knew how hard it was to want to be at home with my kids, but still provide for my family,” says Rutland. “Now, not only am I helping provide for my own, but Tot Swap is helping thousands of other families make some money from selling their goods, and helping families save money by providing them with bargains galore at each of our events. Also, unsold items can be donated to local charities, so we’re helping out families in need as well.”
