Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center Hosts Classes and Meetings in October and November

The Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center, located at 3300 Briggs Chaney Road, Silver Spring, will host a variety of classes and meetings in October and November. A description of these offering is listed below:

• Evening ESOL Classes. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes continue to be open to new students. The Beginner and Intermediate ESOL classes, for all adults who want to learn English, meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost for the classes is $20. There is also a $20 book fee. • HIV Prevention and Counseling Services. GapBuster Learning Center is offering a HIV Prevention/Peer Education program called “Sisters Informing Sisters About Topics on AIDS.” This program provides HIV counseling, testing, and referral services every Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and every Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in October. • Free Pro Bono Legal Clinic. The Montgomery County Bar Foundation Pro Bono Program, in partnership with the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center, provides free legal advice consultations for low income residents. The free clinics are held the first and second Thursdays of each month from 6 to 9 p.m. The next clinics are on October 7 and 14 and November 4. To receive advice, a client intake form must be completed before 6 p.m. on the day of the clinic. • IDA Sector Community Meeting with Police. Residents are urged to make their neighborhood safer by getting actively involved in crime prevention. Join the Third District Police, neighbors and business owners in the Burtonsville, Briggs Chaney, Calverton, White Oak and Hillandale areas at the bi-monthly IDA Sector meeting sponsored by the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center and Third District Police. The meeting will be held on October 12 at 10:30 a.m. in the White Oak Library Meeting Room, located at 11701 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring.

• Free Citizenship Classes. Starting November 3, free Citizenship Preparation classes will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Before starting the classes, students are required to attend an information session on either October 25 at 6 p.m. or October 30 at 9 a.m. at Montgomery College, Westfield South, Suite # 210, 11002 Veirs Mill Road, Wheaton. The classes will focus on preparing legal, permanent residents for the three required citizenship tests – English comprehension, history/government, and a face-to-face interview with an immigration officer. Residents must possess a green card to qualify for the class. The class is being provided in partnership with the Montgomery College Adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Literacy-General Educational Development (GED) Program. • East County Citizens Advisory Board Meeting. Residents are invited to attend the East County Citizens Advisory Board meetings, where they are encouraged to ask questions and provide comments. The next meetings will be held on October 6 and November 3 at 7:15 p.m. For more information, call the Regional Services Center at 240-777-8411.

• AARP Senior Driver Safety Class. AARP sponsors driver safety classes that may help attendees reduce their insurance premiums. The four-hour class will be held Saturday, November 20 at 8:30 a.m. Registration fees are $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-AARP members. A check/money order payable to AARP will be accepted for payment by the instructor on the day of the class. The class is conducted in English and seats are limited.
