Capital One credit card charge-offs increase

Local credit giant Capital One (based in McLean, VA) has stated that its rate of uncollectible credit card balances increased in the third quarter. Initially, it seemed that consumers were showing progress in paying credit card bills, but with the rate of unemployment continuing to climb, consumers are concentrating on major bill payments such as mortgage and automobile payments.

Charge offs for Capital One have increased from $366.8 million to 368 million continuing to show that consumers are still under stress and enduring financial hardships. It has been noted that while consumers are attempting to make payments on their credit card debt, they are still delinquent in their payments.

It has been found that consumers are using credit cards for basic needs such as groceries, gas and prescription drug purchases. In addition, most consumers are carrying at least $10,000 in credit card debt and have at least 5 credit cards.

Maryland Cell Phone Ban Begins

Maryland residents and those residents who travel through Maryland need to know that on Friday, October 1, 2010 (this Friday) - cell phone use will become illegal while driving. The offense will be a "secondary" offense, meaning that offenders can only be cited with it if they are pulled over for another primary offense like speeding or running a red light.

Beginning on Friday, people who wish to make a call while driving MUST use a hands free device. The fine will be $40 for the first offense and $100 for subsequent violations of the law.

Texting while driving has been illegal for some time now and already carries a fine.

Maryland is following suit with several other states with cellular phone bans while in operation of a motor vehicle, but it is one of the only (if not the only) state to list the law as a "secondary" offense.

Montgomery County Asked to Investigate Turf Fields

ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA) The Western Montgomery County Citizen's Advisory Board is asking Montgomery County officials to the safety, health, environmental and financial impacts of artificial turf.

"We've had citizens come to us with questions and the board was not able to take a position," said Sue Knapp, chairman of the MCCAB. "We voted to ask the county to look into it."

Most recently a new turf field has been installed at Walter Johnson High School.

Concern about artificial turf fields dates to 2007, when several fields in New Jersey and New York were taken out of commission because of lead contamination.

Since then, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission determined that children are not at risk from exposure to lead on the fields.
